Description

RARE Mass. Arms Co. Model Maynard 1863 Second Model SRC, .50 Cal., MFG. 1865, SN: 23579, Lever Single Shot Percussion Rifle, 20' Octagon to round barrel. Around 20,202 Second Model/Model 1863 Maynard carbines were manufactured in 1863 to 1865 for use by the Union Cavalry during the Civil War. They were considered among the best weapons of the Civil War by the soldiers who used them on both sides and used re-loadable brass cartridges with holes in the bases that allowed the flame from the percussion cap to ignite the powder which meant they could be fired rapidly. Most show signs of heavy use, but this example is in high all around configuration. It has ''1865'' stamped on the lower tang ahead of the serial number indicating late-war manufacture. The original oil finished stock is excellent & solid, With most of the original finish remaining. There are two clear inspection cartouches ''AIN'' & ''JM'' on left side at wrist. The stock has light scratches & numerous tiny contusions or handling marks, but remains in excellent condition. The case-hardened receiver & lever carry smokey gray outlines of faded case-colors, With muted colors present in protected areas & some spotting. The original blue finish on barrel remains at 80% with areas of thinning, toning a bit plum. Left side of frame marked ''EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE'', ''MAY 27 1851'' & ''DEC 6, 1859'' & ''MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALL.'' on right.. The left side also has a saddle ring bar & ring. Bore is very good. The barrel has a ''pinched'' blade front sight & a three leaf rear sight. Carbine style metal buttplate. This is a rare rifle, in high & original collectible condition. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2500
