VERY RARE ''KENTUCKY'' marked Civil War Ball & Williams, Model: Ballard Infantry Rifle, Cal: 46 Rimfire, MFG. 1862-73, SN: 12123, breech loading lever Action single shot Rifle, 30'' round barrel. The straight grip wood stocks appear to have been sanded and new oil finish applied. The finish is good & there are many small scuffs, scratches & minor contusions that remain after sanding. The metal carries a brown patina over all with the barrel having a lot of scratches where it meets the stock, possible vise marks. The barrel has SN's stamped by receiver that match SN on receiver. The receiver has ''KENTUCKY'' stamped on top, then: ''BALL & WILLIAMS WORCHESTER, MASS. MERWIN & BRAY AGT'S NEW YORK.'' on left side, then, ''BALLARDS PATENT NOV. 5 1861'' on the right side. The stock carries a steel buttplate that is light grey with rust staining.. The barrel carries an original adjustable rear sight with adjustable ladder displaying increments from 3 to 8 & a pinched blade front sight. The blade in front sight, barrel bands & hammer appear to be replacements. Bore is good, with dark color, yet strong rifling. Action remains tight, manual ejector functions. The Ballard is an interesting rifle in that it began its career during the American Civil War, when it was produced in relatively small numbers (only about 24,000 from 1862-1873) by five different manufacturers. It was ultimately made a commercial success when made into one of the staples of the Marlin Company. Charles H. Ballard invented the rifle and the famed arms agents Merwin & Bray secured government contracts and lined up the firearms companies to make them. This example is one of only 3,000 that was purchased by the highly contested state of Kentucky during the conflict. A rare and desirable rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
