Left side of receiver marked: ''SHARPS PATENT 1859'' on 3 lines and Right side of receiver marked: ''SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA'' on 4 lines. Known as the Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 carbine, this weapon is a wartime .52 caliber, rim fire, breech loading firearm designed by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Along with some 6,700 other such Navy carbines produced by the Sharps and Hankins firm in Philadelphia, PA, This carbine was chambered for the No. 56 Sharps & Hankins metallic cartridge. The walnut stock is in very fair condition, carrying a military oil finish with numerous small scratches, scrapes & contusions., There is a 2'' X 3/8'' chip at top rear of buttstock by buttplate on left side. The barrel & other metal surfaces carry a grey/brown patina, with no visible case hardening on receiver remaining. Fitted with six groove and land rifling, The weapon is 38 5/8'' long and weighs about 8 pounds. By tripping the small finger release and operating the lever, the barrel slides forward to accommodate the Sharps rim fire cartridge. Weapon has a 23 5/8'' long, leather-covered (leather missing on this carbine) barrel with no forend, an iron blade front sight and a typical Civil War tangent style rear sight graduated to 800 yards with a leaf that pivots at the front and raises forward in an arc The front sight is a small brass blade on steel block. Left side of receiver is stamped: ''C. SHARPS PAT/SEPT. 12TH The serial number is located on top of the receiver tang. Bore is good, fairly clear, with some light scaring, but distinctive visible rifling. Bottom tang carries the lever locking lug. Single trigger. Brass military style buttplate.
