Richardson & Overman Model Gallager, CAL: 50 Gallager Cartridge, MFG: 1861-65, SN: 19778, Breech loading Single Shot Percussion firing Rifle, 22 1/4'' round barrel. Straight grip Black Walnut wood stock is in good condition, displaying dings/nicks/contusions/scratches equal to age, oil finish with very good wood to metal fit. There is no wood forend. Original metal patch box on right side of buttstock contains a light gray patina with rust spots throughout. The metal finish on the barrel is a dark brown almost black with rust speckling throughout. The receiver retains almost no visible case-colors & has rust spots/speckling overall. The barrel comes fitted with a folding single leaf rear sight t with ''3 & 5'' stamped & pinched blade front sight. Stampings on the obverse side of the iron lockplate are clear and sharp and read, ''MANUFACTURED BY / RICHARD & OVERMAN / PHILADA / 19778 in four lines. An additional stamping of ''Gallagers Patent / July 17th 1860'' located at the left edge of the plate tang. The top of the barrel has a ''J.M.D'' inspector's mark & a pair of cartouches on the left stock flat by the saddle ring and bar. Saddle ring/bar present & in good condition. These carbines saw extended service with Union horse soldiers during the war, but the weapon was not well liked by the troopers due to the difficulty in extracting the spent cartridge casings from the breech. Bore is in excellent condition for age, some darkening, with shine & sharp visible rifling present. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 900 to 5000
