Description

Gwyn & Campbell, Model: Type I Carbine, Under lever breech Loading Percussion Rifle, Cal: .52, SN: 4741. Mfg. 1863-64. 20'' barrel first 3 1/2 '' octagon & remaining is round barrel. Original stock is dark with age & oil staining & appears to have had a light varnish applied at some time. Multiple scratches/dings/contusions over most of stock. 1/4'' hole drilled at top of stock about 1 inch back of top tang, possibly for rear tang sight? Matching serial numbers on barrel, receiver & loading lever. Rust brown patina over all metal parts. Bore contains rust/some pitting yet still has visible rifling. One of some 4,200 carbines produced, the .52 caliber percussion breech-loading carbine was the invention of businessmen Edward Gwyn and partner Abner C. Campbell, both of Hamilton, Ohio. The Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 is the more scarce of the later Type 2 style. The U.S. Ordnance Dept. granted over a dozen contracts to Gwyn & Campbell for a total of 8,202 carbines of both types. A number of Federal cavalry units were armed with the G & C carbine. stamped with maker's mark of ''GWYN & CAMPBELL / PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON, O.'' on the lockplate & stamped ''UNION / RIFLE'' on the obverse side of the frame beneath the nipple area. The long base rear sight sits on the octagon frame and has an adjustable leaf, there is a crack in the sight base under the folding ladder. Front sight is large, solid inverted ''V''.

Fitted with a sling bar & sling ring. Appears mechanically sound & functional. Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 carbine is a fine, scarce cavalry arm of the Civil War. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2500
