The Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 is the more scarce of the later Type 2 style. The U.S. Ordnance Dept. granted over a dozen contracts to Gwyn & Campbell for a total of 8,202 carbines of both types. A number of Federal cavalry units were armed with the G & C carbine. stamped with maker's mark of ''GWYN & CAMPBELL / PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON, O.'' on the lockplate & stamped ''UNION / RIFLE'' on the obverse side of the frame beneath the nipple area. The long base rear sight sits on the octagon frame and has an adjustable leaf, there is a crack in the sight base under the folding ladder. Front sight is large, solid inverted ''V''.
Fitted with a sling bar & sling ring. Appears mechanically sound & functional. Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 carbine is a fine, scarce cavalry arm of the Civil War. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2500
