Description

RARE Civil War US Burnside 4th Model 1864 Saddle Ring Carbine, CAL: 54 Burnside, MFG: 1863-65, SN:11994, Lever Action Falling Block Rifle. 21'' round barrel. The stocks are in fair condition having appeared to been sanded & refinished. & retain some minor contusions, nicks, dings & oil staining. Two cartouche's remain faintly visible on the left side of stock at wrist. The top of the receiver is marked '' BURNSIDE PATENT MODEL OF 1864'' along w/serial number. Matching SN is marked on the top of the falling block. The receiver, hammer, lever, lock appear to have been cleaned of rust/pitting possibly sand blasted leaving light grey & rust stained finish. The barrel is turning plum color & in good condition otherwise ''CAST STEEL 1864'' is stamped on top of barrel ahead of rear sight. Rear sight is folding notch/aperture marked ''3 & 5'' Front sight is a pinched blade. Combination trigger guard & lever operates the unique action. Buttstock carries a smooth metal buttplate which appears to have been cleaned & refinished with brown coloring. Bore is fair to good for age, is darkening with light pitting retains shine & good rifling. Saddle ring bar is present, the ring is not. The Burnside was one of the most widely used Union carbines of the Civil war. This 54 caliber, percussion breech-loading carbine fired a unique cone shaped cartridge. The 4th model was made in 1863 and 1864. It features the redesigned breech block with a hinged center section that facilitates loading. The difference between the 4th model and 5th model is that the 4th model does not have a centrally located breech block guide screw on the left side of the frame. About 7,000 4th models were produced with most being used heavily during the Civil War This is a nice example of a rare, antique rifle with fantastic original collectors condition remaining. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 3000
