Burnside Model 1864, CAL: 54 carbine (aka, ''5th model''), MFG: 1863-64, SN: 2054, Lever Action Rifle, 21'' Cast steel barrel.
Manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., in Providence, RI. General Ambrose Burnside, was an official in the company before the war, but was not involved in wartime development of the weapon. The Burnside carbine employed an unusual cone shaped metal cartridge for use in a percussion system. Standard features include an iron buttplate, single iron barrel band, saddle riding bar & ring on left side, strap hook on bottom of butt, double hinged iron loading lever also serves as a trigger guard, hinged sight, chamber tapered for unique Burnside metal cartridge with a priming hole in the bottom for percussion. The straight grip wood stock is fair & solid, displaying numerous scrapes, contusions, nicks gouges & dings. The metal finish has toned to a spotty brown patina, with pitting throughout. Lock is dark, but ''BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE = R. I.'' can be read. SN appears twice; on the top of the breech & on top of the receiver. ''BURNSIDE PATENT MODEL OF 1864'' stamped on the top of the receiver. There is the remnant of at least one cartouche in the wood on the left side to indicate government inspection,& additional inspector marks on various parts. Bore is fair, worn with use & age. Barrel carries a flip-up rear sight with a ''5'' & ''3'' stamped on it & a pinched blade front sight. Buttstock carries a smooth crescent metal buttplate & sling loop. Approximately 43,000 carbines of this model were produced. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
