Description

Martini Henry Model Artillery Carbine MK III, CAL: 303, MFG: 1878, SN: 6372, Falling block single shot rifle.. 21'' round barrel. Marked on barrel just ahead of receiver with large ''E'' , proof marks on both sided of barrel & serial number. Straight grain, oil finished walnut in good condition, Straight grip buttstock that has multiple stamps & 1'' circle with ''B. E. Co. Ld'' & III'' stamped below circle. Brass stock disc with arrowhead stamping. Numerous scratches & dings with no visible cracks. Barrel & receiver retain about 70% blue overall with some wear to white on sharper edges. This carbine started life in England as a .577/.450 Martini MARK III in 1878, it was reconfigured into a Carbine and was converted to .303 caliber as a Martini-Metford A.C. III Artillery Carbine. Rear sight is V notched ladder adjustable with markings on the base from 200 to 500 and markings on the ladder from 6 to 20. Front sight is small pinched blade on block. This model contains bayonet lug and sling swivels on bottom of buttstock and on front barrel band. Buttplate appears to be in the white with grey patina & in good condition. The original manufacturer information, would be stamped onto the right side of the action, while the left side would have information regarding the conversion. This example is marked on the right action with original maker information: (crown) ''V.R.ENFEILD, 1878, II'' Left side is marked with the conversion information: (crown) '' E.R., B.E.Co, 1901, M.E. 303, AC III. Bore is in excellent condition, shiny with strong rifling. The Martini action, adopted by the British in 1871 was one of the strongest ever developed and saw military service in England and the Empire, in one form or another for almost seventy years.
