RARE!!! Chinese ''Shansei Aresnal'' style, Broomhandle ''Hand Cannon'' Type 17, 45 ACP, Semi-Automatic Pistol, Mfg. 1929-31, SN: 1149, This is a famous Mauser C96 variant or copy made by a Chinese Warlord in the inter-war years between WWI & WWII. During the Chinese Warlord era, the Shansei Province was ruled by the warlord Yen Hsi-shan. He established a modern arms factory in his capital city of Taiyuan. He equipped his troops with a copy of the Thompson Sub-Machinegun. His problem was the Thompson was chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge & his local supply of C96 Mausers were chambered in .30 Mauser (7.62 x 25). Partly due to supply issues with respect to the Mauser ammo, he commissioned his armorer to manufacture a beefed up .45 caliber version of the Broomhandle.
Production of the .45 caliber handgun began in 1929 at the Taiyuan Arsenal. They are inscribed (in Chinese) ''Type 17'' on the left hand side of the gun, & ''Republic Year Eighteen, Made in Shansi'' on the right hand side. They were issued (along with Thompson SMGs) to railway guards in the province as defense against bandits & other warlords. Most of the these .45 pistols were melted down after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, largely due to their odd caliber for Communist Regulations, but a few examples were exported overseas for sale on the commercial market. Only about 8,500 of these are known to have been made. 5 1/2'' barre. Small ring hammer. Has Chinese writing on both sides of frame above grips. Wood grips are excellent. Integral box mag. Slotted backstrap for shoulder mount wood holster conversion. Metal finish is 90% with haze & light surface speckling. Bore is excellent. Overall, very good condition. Trousdale Collection. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
