US Springfield Model 1884/88, CAL: 45-70. MFG: 1880's, SN: 546214, 32 1/2'' barrel, U.S. made trapdoor breech loading action. The serial number most likely indicates that this weapon is an arsenal rebuilt approximately 1890's. In 1879 the Springfield Armory began collecting older .45-70 rifles and using some of the parts to build new weapons, which were held in reserve or eventually issued to various state units (the forerunners to the National Guard). Furthermore, since the rifles were built using entirely interchangeable parts, after the weapons left frontline military service and entered the civilian market (which many did, they are still relatively easy for collectors to obtain), It was simple for gun brokers and owners to cobble together ''new'' weapons with a mixture of parts from different model years. Straight grip Walnut stock is in very good condition for age, may have been lightly sanded/refinished, has about a 3'' spot of discoloration on right side above rear barrel band and few light scratches/dings otherwise in good condition with a faint cartouche in circle below bottom tang, & another on lefts side above trigger. Military metal butt plate with sliding cover for compartment access, little bluing remains, has US stamping at top & ''40'' stamped below that. Barrel turning brown/grey patina overall, with some rust pitting present from the receiver forward several inches ahead of the rear sight. Receiver without bluing with some rust speckling, No case hardening visible. Breech lock marked with ''U.S. MODEL 1884'' & '' 546214'' serial number on the breech block. The lock plate is stamped with eagle & U.S. SPRINGFIELD. Rear sight is ''Bennington'' rear sight (designed by Lieutenant Colonel R.A. Buffington) This new rear sight was incremented at 200yd intervals ranging from point-blank (barrel top) to 1400 yds using a rack and pinion system. Front sight is small blade on metal base. Model 1888's were fitted with a modified version of the ramrod/bayonet combo. This version was more rounded and did not have an effect on the ballistic capabilities of the Model 1888 (unlike previous attempts). There was also an improved retaining mechanism fitted to the Model 1884 and the barrel bands were redesigned to incorporated the new sight system. Bore is in good condition with strong rifling w/ some pitting present.. Steel trigger guard, barrel band, sling swivels & hammer have silver/grey patina & are in good condition. Trigger is serrated for finer manipulation. Mechanical function is good. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 4000
