SCARCE Remington Model 1816/56, CAL: 69, MFG: 1856, SN: none. Percussion muzzle loading rifle, 42'' round barrel. Original straight grip Walnut stock has been sanded & lightly refinished w/ some heavy dings/gouges/scratches/ letters carved in remaining. . Steel nose cap that contains brass pinched blade front sight. 2 steel barrel bands all contain light rust, front barrel band with sling swivel that has part broken off. The barrel is in white with rust staining & greying patina. There is a ''P'' & eagle head stamping at base of barrel & ''JT'' stamped on breech plug. Rear of lockplate is stamped with ''REMINGTON ILION N.Y. 1856 U.S. '' Rifle is mounted with what appears to be an aftermarket replacement rear blued leaf sight that has a sliding elevator. With the elevator folded down, the rear sight is a large ''V'' notch at the top of the elevator. The right & left side of the ladder is marked '' 1, 2, 3, 4'' The ladder is marked on the top w/ increments from ''5 to 8 ''. Bore is fair, beginning to darken w/brown rust, light pitting w/ faint rifling. Buttplate appears original steel in good condition, silver/grey patina w/ ''U.S'' stamp on top near retaining screw. Retains original cleaning rod in good condition. Action is tight and appears to function fully. Remington was contracted to make 20,000 Maynard Tape Priming locks in 1856. Instead of the small fulminate filled metal caps, Maynard Tape was a roll of paper that was impregnated in spots with fulminate. The primary advantage was that the soldier did not have to fumble with tiny caps, because a small wheel inside the lock dispensed primers from the paper roll. This was the system adopted for the Model 1855, and it made sense to update still serviceable flintlocks using this method. However, only about 20,000 of these conversions were done, and the U.S. government eventually chose to go with the cap system when they produced the Model 1861 and 1863 for service during the American Civil War. Most of these various conversions undoubtedly saw combat due to weapons shortages on both sides. A nice, scarce conversion of the Model 1816. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2000
