Rare -Springfield Model 1873/84 Cadet , CAL: 45-70. MFG: 1873-84, SN:311208 W/ 29 1/2'' barrel, U.S. made trapdoor breech loading action. Straight grip stock shows a lot of use/age/handling/storage scratches/dings & some good sized chips at bottom of buttstock from lower tang to buttplate. Most of the cartouche above trigger on left side is chipped out & not legible. Military style metal butt plate with brown patina from rust & stamped ''171'' on top - matching ''171 stamped in wood just above buttplate also has small ''H'' stamping at top. Barrel is plum/grey patina overall, some dings scratches scattered throughout, warn to white at muzzle - Receiver in fair condition turning plumb brown, with no case hardening remaining. Breech lock markings are clear. ''V.P'' over eagle head stamped on barrel just forward of receiver. The lock plate is stamped with eagle & ''U.S. SPRINGFIELD''. Rear sight is Buffington w/the upper right corner of the Buffington sight leaf marked R to indicate that the sight graduations are for a rifle and not a carbine, graduation marks from 1 to 20 on the flip up ladder & in good functioning condition. Front sight is small blade on block, with unusual full round protective steel cover. Bore shows some light rust pitting & is darkening, visible rifling. Steel trigger guard, barrel band, sling swivel & hammer show some rust staining. Trigger is serrated. Double swivels on front barrel band & single swivel on front of trigger guard. Standard cleaning rod/ramrod present. Mechanical function is good. Comes with leather sling. Only 1050 made and one of the scarcest Trap Door rifles. Buffington sight and serrated trigger arsenal updated in the 1880s when many of these were re-issued for cadet use to various Colleges around the country. nice example of classic US issued firearm.
