Description

VERY RARE, U.S Harpers Ferry Contract, Model 1841 Hall's Patent, CAL: 52, MFG: 1842, SN: NONE, but Stamped with the number ''16'' a top the stock behind the receiver. Breech Loading Percussion Rifle, 33'' barrel. There were many percussion conversions of the Model 1819 Flintlock Hall rifle, this example was manufactured as an original percussion breechloader. It is not a conversion from the Model 1819 flintlock model, making it very rare. These guns were manufactured at the Harper's Ferry Federal Arsenal during 1841 & 1842. There are two models, a transitional model that had the original M1819 type hook breech lever release & the updated, more desirable ''Fish-Tail'' breech lever, also known to be used on the Model 1840 Hall percussion breech loading carbine. A total of 4,213 of these rifles were manufactured & the ''Fish-Tail'' type is seen less often than the transitional model. The 1941 rifle is also much less encountered than the more common 1942 carbines. The thumb spur on the Model 1841 rifle is checkered & the conversion hammers used on Model 1819 flint to percussion conversions had no checkering. The breech block markings on the Model 1841 are different, eliminating the ''J.H. Hall'' seen on the Model 1819. This example is stamped ''H. FERRY/U.S 1842'' & a ''16'' cartouche just above the wrist, behind the breech block. The straight grip wood stock is very good to excellent, as cleaned & reoiled, with a couple repaired cracks, minor contusions, nicks & dings throughout. The metal finish is a mix of brown rust patina, with spotting & pitting throughout. The bore is fair, dark & worn. Offset left rear groove sight & blade front sight. Buttstock carries a smooth metal buttplate that's beginning to rust. Single rear sling loop. The action has a bit of play. Missing the cleaning rod. None of the Harper's Ferry produced Hall rifles have inspection cartouches on their stocks. This is a truly scarce U.S. military rifle in good, almost original condition. It would make a nice addition to any collection of Mexican/American War or Civil War memorabilia. More information on the configuration of this rifle can be found in the book ''Small Arms 1856 Ordinance Department on page 94.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 5000 to 15000
