Description

Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine, CAL: 30 WCF, MFG: 1916, SN: 839453, Lever Action SRC, 20'' round barrel, full mag. This carbine may be one of the 1,800 Winchester 1894 carbines purchased in December of 1917, to arm US Army Signal Corps personnel guarding the spruce forests of the Pacific Northwest during the First World War (thus the informal nickname ''Spruce Gun'' among collectors today). Spruce wood was strategically important for aircraft production at the time, & as the Signal Corps was initially responsible for all military aviation matters, they were dispatched to guard spruce lumber forests in the Pacific NW from labor unrest & possible foreign agents. At the time Winchester found themselves with a surplus of 1894 carbines & their sales agents were offering them to municipalities & state agencies for home defense purposes. The signal corps thus procured 1,800 of these 1894 carbines, so that no service rifles would be diverted from front line troops. They were issued to the Army to guard the spruce forests. These carbines were taken from the SN range of 835,xxx & 853,xxx, this carbine falling in the middle of that range at 839,453. This carbine does not carry the ''US'' & flaming bomb stamps flanking the Winchester proof on the top of the breech like most marked ''Spruce Guns'', but it does carry the ''J.C. '17'' stamping under the SN like many other ''Spruce Guns''. Rick Hills article on these ''Spruce Guns'' is included below & is a great read. This rifle has been professionally restored. The straight grip gum wood stocks are excellent, having been lightly sanded & professionally refinished. The stocks shows few tiny scratches & light contusions. The stocks have an excellent overall appearance. The professional metal blue refinish rates 98%, with a bit of haze developing on the left side of the receiver. The receiver does show evidence of polishing prior to the reblue & there are some areas of light pitting under the blue. Bore is very good & bright. Barrel holds a folding leaf rear sight & carbine double box large blade front sight. Original carbine style metal buttplate. Saddle ring. Smooth, tight action appears to function correctly. A very nicely & beautifully restored WWI era SRC, that could be part of the fabled ''Spruce Gun'' armament. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2500
