Remington, Model 81, CAL: .300 SAV, MFG: 1946, SN: 23923, Semi-Auto Rifle, Take-down, 22'' barrel. Patented by John Moses Browning, the Model 81 was Remington's updated version of the model 8. The primary difference being a style change to the wood stocks. On this example, the flat grip wood stocks are very good & solid. The stocks do not match, & while both are factory pieces, one is likely a replacement. They carry original factory finish, both thinning & flaking from use, more heavily on the forearm. There are other marks, scratches or contusions, as well as three small ''kill'' marks on the left side of the forearm. The rifle has been professionally altered to make the magazine detachable. There is a release button on the bottom of the triggerguard. The sides of the receiver each carry an extra screw to hold in the internal parts now that the magazine can be removed. The original metal blue finish rates 85% overall, with the triggerguard being reblued as part of the process of making the mag detachable. The receiver once held a Redfield receiver tang & has a filler screw where the receiver was tapped for the second screw mounting. The barrel carries a Marble's adjustable buckhorn rear & ''000'' front sights. Bore is very good. Stock carries an original checkered metal buttplate. Sling swivel only in the forearm. The lower tang of the pistol grip has a screw which has been partially drilled out & remains stuck. In its day, this was a popular semi auto rifle for big game hunting. Because it is chambered in the readily available 300 Sav., these rifles are still often used by modern hunters. The detachable magazine feature on this rifle makes it convenient to load & a nice alteration. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
