Remington, Model 16, Take-down Rifle, Marked .22 REMINGTON AUTO Cal., MFG: 1916-28, SN: 12416, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' Tapered round barrel, Remington's first production semi-auto .22 rifle. Just 17,720 were manufactured during the 13 yrs of production. The original factory wood is very good & solid, with numerous small handling marks & contusions to the original finish. There is one small wood chip at the tip of the schnabel forend. The original metal blue finish is toning to a mix of blue to plum/brown patina, with 85% coverage. Bore is very good. Barrel carries a screw adjusting rear & small blade front sights. Matching SN on receiver & barrel. The .22 Remington Auto fired a 45 grain bullet approximately 950 feet per second, with 90 ft. lbs of muzzle energy. Due to the larger diameter of the case, the cartridge is not interchangeable with the .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle. The reason for the unique cartridge was to prevent use of black powder .22 S, L, & LR cartridges from being fired in this gun, which was previously the standard at the time. Black powder doesn't work well in semi-auto guns, another reason the semi-autos arrived on the scene around the time of the adoption of smokeless powder. An interesting & fairly rare semi-auto rifle & an early ancestor to Remington's semi auto offerings. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 600 to 1000
