Atlas Gun Co., 1st Model Atlas .22 Short or Long Cal., MFG 1890's (Antique), SN: None, 18'' Round barrel, Single shot rifle. The Atlas Gun Co. was started in 1890 & existed only a short time until it was sold to the Meridian Firearms Company, a subsidiary corp of Sears, Roebuck & Co.. The Atlas rifle was made on what is referred to as an ''unlocked breech'' system. That is, the hammer acts as a breech block. When the hammer is cocked, it moves downward & slightly to the rear, exposing the open breech for cartridge insertion. The top of the barrel is stamped ''ATLAS GUN CO. ILION N.Y. PAT'D. FEB. 18 1890'''. The original walnut straight stock is very good, with original finish. There are several a small contusions along the upper right edge in the area of the ejector lever. There is also a small wood chip at the rear of the comb at the buttend. The metal finish has toned to an even brown patina, with several small abrasions in area of ejector lever. Bore is poor, with dark rust pitting & almost no rifling. Barrel has an open fixed rear & pin front sights. Manufactured without a buttplate. A fairly rare little boys rifle.
