Description

Remington, Model 17, CAL: 20 GA., MFG. 1917-33, SN: 69595, Full choke, 21 1/2'' Pump action, John Browning patent & the predecessor to the Ithaca 37 shotgun. This shotgun comes with a bit of history regarding the original owner Axsel Johnson. Born in Norway in 1886, he immigrated to America at the age of 21. Settling in Ilion in 1907, he immediately started working at the Remington Firearms plant, where he worked his entire career. That same year he helped found The Ilion Fish & Game Club. He was a life member of the Herkimer County Firemen's Assoc., one of Ilion's first firemen & the first to drive Ilion's first mechanized fire truck. In addition to his job as a polisher, he organized the Remington plant fire brigade. In 1921 he helped organize Ilion's first gun club. He was instrumental in overseeing the restocking of fish in the local streams & credited with releasing the county's first pheasant into the wild in 1915. He was also a member of the Remington Plant's shooting team. Included in the auction are seven letters from the Remington Arms Company & Peters Cartridge Division, recognizing his shooting accomplishments spanning the years 1934-41. Also included are copies of photos & articles, one of which is a newspaper article reporting on a celebration held in his honor & attended by 150 friends to recognize his life accomplishments & contributions to the surrounding community. This model 17 was his personal gun & the one he often carried while walking the woods of Herkimer County. It was said to have been awarded to him upon obtaining a certain anniversary level as a Remington employee. The original, capped pistol grip, hand checkered wood stocks are excellent, with excellent finish & few handling marks or contusions. Metal blue finish is 95% blue on the barrel & receiver, 90% on tube, Remington buttplate. Excellent bore. Front & rear sights, receiver mounted scope base, with separated scope ring mount accompany gun. Sling studs, 14'' LOP. The Remington collector who consigned the gun acquired it from Axsel's decedents. It's a nice looking 20 ga., with some interesting Remington & Ilion historical prominence. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1200
