Gwyn & Campbell, Model: Type II Carbine, Under lever breech Loading Percussion Rifle, Cal: .52, SN: 2135, MFG: 1863-64. 20'' octagon/round barrel. One of just 4,200 carbines produced. The .52 caliber percussion breech-loading carbine was the invention of businessmen Edward Gwyn & partner Abner C. Campbell, both of Hamilton, Ohio. The Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 is the more scarce of the later Type 2 style. The U.S. Ordnance Dept. granted over a dozen contracts to Gwyn & Campbell for a total of 8,202 carbines of both types. A number of Federal cavalry units were armed with the G & C carbine. Original stock is dark, with age & oil staining. Multiple scratches, scuffs & contusions. Two cartouches of left side of stock by wrist. Matching SN's on barrel, receiver & loading lever. Rust brown patina & heavy cleaned pitting on metal parts. Bore contains rust pitting, yet still has visible rifling. The long base rear sight sits on the octagon frame and has an adjustable leaf,. Front sight is large, solid inverted ''V'', both sights are heavily worn. Fitted with a sling bar & sling ring. Appears mechanically sound & functional. This Gwyn & Campbell Type 2 carbine is a fine & scarce cavalry arm of the Civil War. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
