Description

Joslyn Firearms Co., Model 1864 Carbine, CAL: 54 cal RF, MFG: 1855-65, SN: 15625, Civil War Era Single Shot Breech Loading Rifle. 22'' round barrel. One of only 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn breech loading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department from the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut. The carbine had a blue barrel & case-hardened iron mountings, & a hooded firing pin that distinguish the Model 1864 Carbine from the brass mounted Model 1862 Carbine. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight & a flip-up rear sight. The lock plate is marked ''JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON CONN/1864'' ahead of the hammer & the rear of the breechblock is marked ''B.F. JOSLYN PATENT/OCTOBER 8TH 1861/JUNE 24TH 1862''. The matching SN is located on the top of the breechblock & upper tang. The heel or upper tang of the buttplate is marked ''US''. Mounted with a one piece straight grip stock with saddle ring & bar on the left side. The Joslyn was an effective & popular carbine that was widely issued by the Federal Cavalry throughout the Civil War. The stock is in very good condition, as sanded & re-oiled, with light scratches & dings. There is a sliver of wood missing by the right lock plate & a small chip behind the breech. Barrel has 50% remaining blue, with rust spotting & brown patina. Breech block showes rust spotting & brown patina. Saddle ring is present & in good condition. Trigger guard, hammer & side plates are worn, with rust spotting & brown patina. Bore is good, with rust spotting & defined rifling. Rear sight is a two position flip sight, ''V'' notch & aperture hole. Pinch blade front sight. Steel buttplate showes wear, rust spotting & brown patina. Action appears mechanically sound. A rare example of an early Civil War era carbine. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
