Sharps Carbine, Model 1859, CAL: 50-70, MFG: 1867-81, SN: 74645, Lever Action Breech Loading Single Shot Rifle, 22'' round barrel. Left side of receiver marked: ''SHARPS PAT./SEPT 12th 1848'' in 2 lines & right side of receiver marked: ''R.S. LAWRENCE PAT. APRIL 12th, 1859'' on 2 lines by the hammer & below that is: ''C. SHARPS' PAT/OCT 5th 1852'', top of rear sight block is marked '' R.S.LAWRENCE PATENTED FEB 15TH (date unreadable)''. Left side of barrel is marked, ''F'', ''G''. The walnut stock is good & solid, darkened from use & with lots of wear, numerous scratches, scrapes & dings. There are two wood chips at the left wrist. The barrel & other metal surfaces carry a brown rust patina, with splotchy, but visible shadows of case-colors remaining on the receiver. This carbine is missing the front sight. The notched rear ladder sights shows wear with faint graduations markings & it's missing slide piece. Bore is good, with light rusting. Bottom tang carries the lever locking lug. Upper tang has a crack at the upper screw. Stock carries a steel military style buttplate. Action is strong & mechanically sound. Sharps rifles are a series of large-bore single-shot rifles, beginning with a design by Christian Sharps in 1848 & ceasing production in 1881. They were, & still are renowned for their long-range accuracy. The most famous, single-shot percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps breech-loading carbine. 100,000 Sharps rifles & carbines were purchased & used by the federal government during the American Civil War. These powerful, accurate & reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself & on the Western Frontier. The Sharps rifles became icons of the American Old West due to their appearances in many Western movies & books. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 3000
