Starr, Model 1858 Carbine, CAL: .54cal, MFG: 1861-64, SN: 7996, Single shot falling block breech mechanism carbine. 21'' Round barrel, This is a rare example of one of approximately 20,600 percussion carbines produced. The lock is marked ''STARR ARMS CO. / YONKERS, N.Y.'' & the upper tang is marked ''STARRS PATENT / SEPT. 14TH 1858'' directly behind the hammer. The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is faintly marked ''STARR ARMS CO YONKERS N.Y.''. The SN appears on the right side of the locking block, which is visible when lever is lowered. Fixed front & two leaf rear sights, saddle ring & staple mounted on the left rear of receiver, brass single barrel band & buttplate with a small ''S'' stamped on the upper tang of buttplate above the screw. The walnut wood stocks are good & solid, after repair, which spliced in & replaced the lower half of the buttstock. The stock have been sanded at repair & has an added layer of finish. There is a glue repaird 2 1/2'' crack at the toe, other short hairline cracks at the wrist & numerous small dings, scratches & contusions. Metal surfaces have all fully rust pitted, which has been scrubbed leaving a stippled surface. Bore is fair, with rust pitting, but strong rifling. Tight mechanics. In government tests of the Starr carbine, it rated higher than the better known Sharps carbines. The Starr carbine was issued primarily to Union Cavalry troops in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri & New York, A well worn example of one of the rarer arms used during the civil war. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
