Description

Mass Arms Co., Model ''Smiths Carbine'', CAL: .50cal, MFG: 1861-65, SN: 5354, Break Action Percussion Rifle, 21 5/8'' octagon/round barrel. The Smith carbine was a rifled, breech loading .50 caliber rifle used primarily by Union cavalry. It has a unique break-top mechanism. Some 30,000 were issued to Union troops. The Smith carbine was the fourth most popular carbine used during the Civil War. The Smith used special ammunition housed in a tube made of India rubber. This contained the cartridge & when fired prevented flareback to protect the shooter. Not long after the invention of the carbine, Smith & Wesson & Henry created self-contained metallic ammunition. This ammunition, unusable in the Smith led to the development of the repeating carbines that surpassed it later in the war. The left side of receiver marked '' MANUFACTURED BY MASS. ARMS CO CHICOPEE FALLS'', '' ADDRESS POULTNEY & THIMBLE BALTIMORE.U.S.A.'','' SMITH'S PATENT JUNE 23, 1857''. There's an ''E B'' etched into the left side of the stock. The wood stocks are good, with scratches, nicks & dings. There is a 4'' hairline crack in stock on left side of the wrist. The lower tang missing rear screw for stock, but stock is still tight. The barrel has toned to a brown patina, with rust spotting & the receiver has toned to a mix of grey/aged patina, with rust spotting. Bore is fair, with worn rilfing, roughness & pitting. The barrel holds a ''V'' notch rear ladder sight & a blade front sight. The metal buttplate has cleaned pitting, with brown patina. This is a rare rifle, in original collectible condition. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
