British Enfield, Model 1853 Snider II, CAL: 577 Snider, MFG: 1858, SN: 1488, Single Shot Breech Loading Trapdoor Rifle, 36 1/2'' Round barrel. Jacob Snider, an American from New York, developed this breech loading system for the P-1853 Enfield, the most prolific imported Percussion rifle in use by both the North & South during the U.S. Civil War. When the British Board of Ordnance appointed a Select Committee in 1864, the Snider system was swiftly adopted, with the first breech loaders being issued in 1865 to British forces. Improved in 1867 by the use of Colonel Boxer's center fire brass bodied cartridge, the rifle was used very effectively in the Abyssinian Campaign of 1868. The system utilized a hinged breech block with an internal firing pin assembly that permitted the use of a self contained cartridge of lead bullet in cardboard, & after 1867, brass casing. This highly efficient conversion system prolonged the active life of the P-1853 rifles up until 1871 when the Martini System was adopted. Snider rifles saw continued use throughout the Empire, but were officially obsolete by the late 1880s. A very rare opportunity to own a significant piece of military history that greatly affected wars on three continents. The original straight grip stock is good, with numerous contusions, scratches, nicks & dings, all consistent with war use. The stock as also received layers of added finish over its life. The barrel, side plate & surrounding metal surfaces have toned to a mix of metal grey & a thin brown patina. The barrel, receiver & trapdoor are stamped w/proofmarks & '' II''. Right sidelock is stamped with British crown over ''V.R.'' a smaller crown, ''17 '', & ''1858 ENFIELD''. The barrel holds an adjustable rear sight with increments from 1 to 4 on side & a flip-up ladder with increments 5 to 7. The front sight is small inverted ''V'' on a block. Has original cleaning rod. Bore is fair, with light rust spots amongst the rifling. Original sling loops, with a yellow sling. Action is tight. It appear the firing pin is missing & the outer mechanism housing is broken. The brass trigger guard, nose cap & buttplate original to gun. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 400 to 800
