Description

Allen & Wheelock, Drop Breech. CAL: 41 RF, MFG: 1860-71, SN: 1030, American made single shot falling block rifle. 26'' Half hex & half round barrel. The rifle saw limited service in the American Civil War & only then were they aquired through private purchase by soldiers & not as standard issue equipment. As such, they saw limited production totals of no more than 2,000 out of their Worcester, Massachusetts facility. The straight grip walnut stock is aethetically good & solid, but has had a fairly extensive amount repair to the stock to make it solid. There are multiple cracks at the upper & lower tangs, a large repaired/replaced piece of wood on ride side of wrist, several dowels & an area of fill, both barely visible in the belly of the stock, & a chip along the upper right tang edge & at the toe. There are also a couple of tight hairline cracks on forened in front of receiver. Barrel & receiver have worn & aged to an uneven brown patina, with light rust spotting. Top of barrel is marked ''ALLEN & WHEELOCK. ALLENS PAT SEP 18 1860''. Left side of receiver is marked with the 0 to 10 sight graduations. Rear V notch receiver sight is hinged & raises to the desired graduation. Front sight is a very thin blade. Open dovetail on rear tang. Sling studs missing from the forend cap & plate in the belly of buttstock. Bore is very good & bright, with light rust spotting & sharp visible rifling. The stock carries a crescent metal trapdoor buttplate. Mechanical function appears good, Matching visible S/N on receiver, internals of lever & underside of rear sight. A very rare example of Civil War era gun, likely used in the war. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
