German Mauser DANZIG Model GEW 88/05 Commission Rifle, Re-arsenal short rifle. CAL: 7.92 X 57mm Mauser S patrone. MFG: 1891, SN: 9238b. German made bolt action, 22 1/4'' barrel. The straight grip stock is excellent, as nicely refinished & with light scraps & dings. Metal surfaces have a greenish applied finish. Receiver left side markings, S/N, ''P'', ''GEW.88.'', right side receiver markings, proof markings. top of receiver markings, ''S'', Crown,'' DANZIG'', ''1891''. Rear sight is a ladder style, with Turkish number markings. Front sight is an inverted V. Bore is very good, bright, with sharp rifling. Matching SN on barrel & receiver. Bolt & floorplate carry different SN. Military style metal buttplate with stampings ''9'', ''K'' Crown over P,''0'', ''8''. Both sling swivels are present. The Gewehr 88 has been the subject of controversy among gun experts for years. Because the rifle was loaded with a clip resembling that of the Mannlicher and based on his patents, it is often mistakenly referred to as the Mannlicher or as the Mauser-Mannlicher. Its official designation was German Infantry Model 1888, but it is often listed in Germany as Mauser & Commission. This rifle was updated in 1904 to use the new bigger diameter & spitzer 8mm Mauser ammo. Also updated is a stripper clip guide for use with stripper clips & newer ammo without the enbloc clip.. However, this rifle can still use the old ammo with the enbloc clip. A snap-on floorplate cover was added to cover up the hole in the magazine previously meant for the enbloc to fall out. Now it flies out of the top when its empty. Also, there is a ''U'' cut in the receiver by the production date, meant so you can feed the pointed spitzer bullet ammo. These rifle's can have four different bores/chamber sizes, so we recommend the chamber be checked by a gunsmith before shooting. These rifles are also not meant for the later higher pressure 8mm mauser rounds, so do some reaserch to know what ammo you can shoot with out damaging the rifle. Cleaning rod present. A nice vintage German Mauser. Mechanical function is good. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 300 to 500
