Brescia Italian Vetterli, Model 1870/87/15 Carcano Conversion, CAL: 6.5x52 Carcano, MFG: 1878, SN: LQ2595, Bolt Action Rifle, 33 3/4'' round barrel. The refinished straight grain walnut stock is very good, with light scratches, nicks, dings & a large 5'' replacement repair at the heel. There are two very faint cartouches on the left side of the stock above the wrist & a large oval cartouche & banner on the right side of stock: Below that is an row of letters & numbers which are difficult to read. The restored metal finish rates 90% overall, with small areas of thinning, spotting & pitting. Bore is very good, dark, but with strong rifling. The barrel holds a ''V'' notched rear elevator sight numbered ''275'' & adjustable ''6 to 20'' & blade front sight. Buttstock carries a smooth metal buttplate. Marked on barrel just ahead of receiver on left is: ''BRESCIA'', ''28'' & ''1878'', several proof or inspection stamps, SN, then '' 91+M''' on the right side. Barrel has bayonet lug 3.5'' from muzzle. Has sling loops & cleaning rod. This rifle was converted to the 6.5 Italian service ammunition during WWI, this was done by soldering a 6.5 liner in the bore. A new magazine was also installed that allows use of the Mannlicher-Carcano six shot clip. By World War 1 (1914-1918), the Italian government found itself desperately short of supplies & products, including service rifles. It committed to the war effort on the side of the Allies in 1915 & quickly scoured its arsenals for useful weapons of all types. This meant that the aged Model 1870s were still in play, numbering in the hundreds of thousands. However, modern conversions were forced upon the design in an attempt to produce a more viable end-product. The biggest of these changes being the conversion to the Italian 6.5x52mm Carcano standard rifle cartridge, with its smokeless powder. A unique rifle having undergone several upgrades to keep it participating in several conflicts over the years. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 200 to 400
