Day's Patent, Mid 19th Century Percussion Walking Stick. 29 3/4'' Steel barrel. Overall length 33 3/4''. The firing system is known as a ''DAY'S PATENT'' ignition, system patented in 1823 by JOHN DAY. There are the remnants of the ''DAY'S PATENT'' mark below the cap lock nipple & the date ''1861''. Intended for self defense from the roving bands of thugs, this weapon disguised as a walking stick was certainly a surprise for any assailant. The gun fires a lead ball of approximately 1/2'' across, like a .50 caliber. Has a twist off barrel from the handle & firing mechanism. There is a replaced brass ring that is hooked to the hammer, which when pulled outward, cocks the fold out percussion hammer & hidden trigger. The entire cane appears to be manufactured from steel, which has a heavily pitted exterior & brown patina. There is a 2 1/4'' x 1 1/2'' silver initial plate on the bend of the handle, which has some worn engraved initials. Bore is dark, heavily worn & heavily pitted. Comes with what might be the original wood barrel tip plug. Cane comes stored in an excellent wood case, with green velvet interior & locking key. An interesting weapon of deception.* Antique, no FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 5000
