Description

Fabulous Civil War Henry Repeating Rifle, .44 Henry Cal., MFG. 1863, SN: 3493, Lever Action Rifle. This is a Martially inspected & Civil War utilized Henry. ''Oliver F. Winchester wrote rifles such as this, with no sling provisions, were ''Cavalry'' arms, while those with sling loops were considered ''Infantry'' arms. The serial number is found on the rear top of the barrel, on the lower tang under the stock, on the stock under the upper tang, on the inside of the buttplate & on the shank of the screws. All of the numbers match & are correct. Marked on the side of the receiver is a ''HC'' stamp. Usually only one of these letters will be seen in this location, a double stamp indicates the rifle was inspected & approved a second time. This is unusual but has been observed on other Henry rifles. Of martial history, the letter ''H'' indicates B. Tyler Henry, who was the inside contractor who inspected & approved the rifle. On the side of rear of the barrel is also the marking ''C''. ''C.G.C.'' is also stamped on the rear of the barrel & is the U.S. Inspectors approval stamps. Charles G. Chapman was an ordnance inspector at the New Haven Arms Company during the period of the Civil War. On the wrist of the stock is seen the inspector's cartouche ''C.G.C.'', which is the approval mark of the U.S. Inspector for the fit of the stock & the quality of the walnut. Both the buttplate screws are serial numbered, which is correct for a Henry of this serial range. The buttplate is of the early style with a rounded tang. A four piece hickory cleaning rod is in the stock compartment. Both sights are correct; with a slide adjustable rear ladder sight, with graduations from one to nine hundred & a nickel-silver blade style front sight in the loading sleeve retaining band. The stock has been cleaned & had an layer of protective oil added. The stock remains in unusually fine condition, with the ''Henry Bump'' still remaining on the left side of the stock & as is the cartouche on the right side of the wrist. All of the steel & iron parts of this rifle are in very good condition having a smooth even brown patina. There is speckling & light pitting on the barrel. Bronze parts are in an unusual fine condition, with a smooth even patina. Metal parts on this gun show some use, but no abuse. The bore is very good, with spotty areas of roughness or pitting amongst strong rifling. Martial Henry rifles are amongst the rarest of collectible arms. Very limited numbers were made & most of them have seen a great deal of use & abuse. Most Martial marked Henry's saw use in the Civil War, then went to the frontier & Indian Wars in the west. Improper storage has also allowed most of these guns to deteriorate. Because it is a Martial Henry & in unusually good condition, this is one of the rarest of collectors arms. With its age of over a century & a half, & its historical importance, number 3493 will have a prominent place in any collection or museum. Here is your rare opportunity to buy a historically significant Civil War rifle & one in very nice surviving condition.* Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 30000 to 45000
