Description

RARE Winchester, Model 94 SRC (MODEL 94/95 Hybrid), CAL: 30 WCF, MFG: 1928, SN: 1033253, Lever Action Rifle, 21 3/4'' barrel. This is a rare & unusually configured SRC rifle. In the book, ''The Winchester Model 94 The First 100 Years'', by Robert C. Renneberg, a special SRC is featured. The rifle is listed as one of three known to exist, making this rifle potentially being one of the unknown examples. The rifle pictured is SN 1,032,618, just 635 guns appart from this rifle. As discussed in the book, this carbine & the one featured are both built with a ''Mysterious'' 21 1/2'' barrel that is reputed to be a modified or cutdown 24'' Model 95 NRA musket barrel. Although they ustilized left over model 95 barrels, the barrel is Marked on the left side under the rear sight, ''-MODEL 94- WINCHESTER- NICKEL STEEL- 30 WCF-'' & a second line ''--TRADE MARK--''They both feature a standard length carbine magazine tube, with the rifle style magazine tube retainer. Also note the unusual ramp front sight & pinned blade arrangement, rather than most ramp style sights which are dovetailed for the blade. He states these guns were produced at the end of 1927 or first part of 1928. In the book, the author indicates ''the three carbines with 21 1/2'' barrels & another 15 which featured 20'' barrels, have been highly researched & closely examined, but no conclusive answers are forrthcoming''. In 1985 Art Gogan, a Winchester collector, author & member of Winchester Arms Collectors Association's (WACA), published a short article in the Association journal ''The Winchester Collector'' which discussed a one of these unique carbines. In it, he mentioned the unique 1 to 10'' barrel twist versus the standard 1 to 12'' associated with the typical .30 W.C.F. model 94. In a follow-up article in 1989, Mr. Gogan indicated a total of 12 of these similar Hybid carbines had been located with either 20'' or 22'' barrels. Only one fouth being of the 22'' variety (which he termed the 2nd variesty), & would include a 213/4'' example such as this carbine. Two additional fabuloous articles on these Hybrid 94/95 Carbines were authored for the (WACA) magazine, in the summer of 2012 pages 8-11. & spring 2021 pages 52 & 53. In the 2012 article, the SN range of these Hybrid carbines was listed to be 1014894 to 1033596, with a total of 51 carbines observed. In the 2021 article, a hand written note is pictured which was found amonst the original Winchester records available online from the McCracken library. The note seems to indicate as many a 203 22'', 349 20'' with plug screw & another 751 20'', or a total of 1303 were assembled by October 1928 using altered barrels from 95 30-05 barrels. If this note is refering to these rare Hybid carbines, less than 1 in 6 were of the 22'' variety. The full story & history behind why these unique carbines were built, who may have ordered them & why they were configured as such, will likely remain a mystery.

CONDITION:The straight grip wood stock is very good, with small surface scrapes, nicks & dings. The finish appears to have been cleaned, with an added layer of protective oil. The refinished metal blue finish rates 85% overall, with spotty areas of pitting, mostly on the receiver, & buffing lines under the blue. Bore is very good. The barrel holds the correct adjustable flip-up ladder sight & the aforemention unique blade front sight. There is a factory Model 95 rear sight mounting hole on the top of the barrel about an inch from the receiver, which was factory plugged with a fill screw. The buttstock carries a smooth metal carbine style buttplate. Typical saddle ring on left side of receiver, with protective tape wrapped around it. This unique SRC rifle is possibly one of the rarest of 94 carbines produced & has a nice refinished appearance. (Additional information was added to this description.)
