Description

RARE Starr Arms Civil War Breech Loading Percussion Carbine, CAL: 54, MFG: 1862-65, SN: 12371 (SN & an ''H'' & ''P'' stamped under the forend), 20 7/8'' barrel. This is an outstanding example of one of approximately 20,600 percussion carbines produced by Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. This carbine is a percussion single shot, with a falling block breech mechanism. The lock is marked ''STARR ARMS CO. / YONKERS, N.Y.'' & the upper tang is marked ''STARRS PATENT / SEPT. 14TH 1858'' directly behind the hammer. The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is marked ''STARR ARMS CO YONKERS N.Y.'', The left side of the barrel at the breech is marked ''LAB'' & the left side of the rear sight base is marked with the letter ''B''. Rifle fitted with a two leaf rear & small blade on box front sights, Staple mounted saddle ring on the left rear of receiver. Brass single barrel band marked with a ''U''. Brass buttplate stamped with an ''B'' on upper tang. The original wood stocks are very good, with nicks & dings, & some cracks at the toe which have been stabilized with a pin in the belly at the toe.. Has a smooth forearm. The numbers ''127'' stamped in the wood on right side of wrist. The metal finish has toned mostly to gun metal grey, with areas of thinning brown patina. Bore is very good. In government tests of the Starr carbine, it rated higher than the better known Sharps carbines. The Starr carbine was issued primarily to Union cavalry troops in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and New York. A rare, original & collectible Starr Carbine & a real piece of Civil War History.
