Description

ULTRA RARE Winchester, Model 1890 SPECIAL ORDER GALLERY, 2nd variation, .22 SHORT Cal., MFG: 1899, SN: 68515, Pump Action Rifle, This rifle comes with a Cody Factory Record Letter indicating this rifle was ordered with an extremely rare 29'' Octagonal barrel. Standard barrel length of an 1890/90 was 24'', with over 850,000 produced. According to the highly detailed book ''Winchester Slide Action Rifle, Volume 1: Model 1890 & Model 1906'', by Ned Schwing, only 57 rifles had barrels longer than the standard. 10 had 26'' barrels & 47 had 29'' barrels. He states, ''all 47 of these 29'' barrel model 90's were ordered by the same individual.'' It is likely since all these Gallery 29'' barrel rifles were ordered by the same customer, they were likely meant for use in a Shooting Gallery. In the ''Winchester Handbook'' by George Madis, there is a photo of one of these very rare 29'' rifles. Interestingly, the rifle pictured does not possess yet another very rare feature of this rifle. As mentioned in the letter, this rifle was ordered with a set of sling eyelets, with the forward eyelet placed at the muzzle end. Another example of these 29'' rifles has also been observed with this ''loop under muzzle'' feature. These muzzle loops were for attaching a thin chain to keep gallery shooters from either removing the rifle or swinging it in an unsafe manner. The original straight grip stock is very good & solid, as sanded & refinished. There are still numerous light scratches, nicks & ding, especially on the forend, as consistent with a gallery rifle. The letter indicates this is a 1/2 Nickel rifle, which remnants of the original nickel finish remain on the buttplate & on the inside of the receiver. The rest of the nickel finish has long since worn away & is replaced with a thin brown patina which matches the finish of the barrel & mag. The rifle is fitted with standard factory sights. Bore is fair & rough, but still has solid rifling. Original crescent metal buttplate. The triangle shaped gallery loading port has been enlarged, probably to facilitate quicker loading at the gallery back in the day. Tight smooth action. Comes with the factory letter, a look up sheet & additional research. An exceptionally rare & very unique rifle from the golden era of shooting galleries. A very collectible piece of history.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 3000 to 5000
