Description

U.S Springfield, Conversion Rifle, CAL: .58 Cal., MFG: 1861 SN: 29 (as marked under the breechblock), Breech loading Rifle, 19 1/2'' barrel. This rifle has had a unique & full history. According to a U.S. Springfield enthusiest, historian & collector who has examined the rifle, it started its life as a 1861 U.S. Springfield Percussion Flintlock Musket. It was later returned to the arsenal to be updated. During the Civil War Colt received a contract from U.S. Springfield to assist in the manufactoring & fulfilment of 1863 Musket rifles. However, those rifles made by Colt were arsenal rejected for military distribution. They are refferred to as 1863 Colt Special Muskets or 2nd muskets. They remained in the arsenal to be reworked or for parts. When our rifle was returned to the arsenal, to be reworked to fulfill a French Contract with the U.S. Arsenal for weapons to fight in the Franco Prussion War. It received an Allen Lock Breechblock Conversion utilizing an 1883 breechblock. It also received a replaced side or cockplate scavanged from one of the 1863 Colt muskets. The side plate is stamped ''1864'' & three line address ''U.S. COLT PT F.A. MFG Co. HARTFORD CT.''. Accounts differ, but there were between 52,000 & 60,000 rifles/muskets produced, but only 23,000 to 26,000 were eventually sent to France. Skip forward to WW1. Our consignor's Great Grandfather fought in France during WW1. Sometime during the war he obtained this rifle & it was brought back to the U.S. as a war trophy. The stock & barrel had been cutdown some time between the Franco Prussion & its ultimate use during WW1. The rifle remained in the family until its offering in this auction.

The straight grip & cut down wood stock is very good, displaying various minor contusions, scrapes & scratches There remains a faint rectangular cartouche on the left side above the trigger guard. The metal has worn to a spotty brown patina, with remnants of original blue remaining on Colt sideplate & hammer. Breechblock is stamped ''MODEL 1873''. Bore is very good, with roughness amongst clear rifling. The barrel holds a ''U'' notch rear sight & post blade front sight. Buttstock carries a smooth metal carbine style buttplate. An unusual, well traved & survivor of three major wars. A true piece of history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2500
