U.S. Springfield. Model 1884. CAL: 45-70. MFG: 1888. SN: 397320. Single shot trapdoor breach loader. 32 1/2'' Round barrel. The stock is very good, with a large portion of the original finish remaining. There are two clear cartouches on the stock, a ''SMP 1887'' one on left side at the wrist above the trigger & a circle ''P'' behind the lower tang. There are small nicks, scratches & dings, & a thin area of red paint on stock near lock plate & buttplate. The original blue finish is thinning, but rates 70% as it tones to a brown patina. The case-hardened breech block displays nice remains of case-coloring, especially on the inside of the breach. There is also some red paint is on the checkering of the hammer & on the buttplate. Right side of lock plate is marked with eagle & ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Rear of receiver is marked with S/N, Top of breach block is marked, ''U.S.'', ''MODEL'', ''1884''. Left side of barrel marked, ''V.P'' over eagle head, ''P''. Middle of barrel is marked with ''A''. Front sight is a fixed blade, rear sight is an original windage & elevation adjustable flip-up rear ladder sight, marked 2 to 20. Bore is very good, with roughness & more worn rifling at muzzle. Checkered trigger. Military style metal butt plate with ''US'' stamping at top near screw. Both sling loops & stacking loop are present. No cleaning rod present. A nice collectors piece.
