FABULOUS Colt, Model 1851 Navy Engraved Gold Damascening, CAL: 36, MFG: 1866, SN: 187803, Single Action Percussion Revolver, 7 1/2'' barrel. The art of Gold Damascening is very unique, not known by a vast majority of gun owners & something seldom seen. Gold damascening was introduced in the 13th Century, with most of the early decorations applied to armor & firearms. Time intensive to apply & expensive to acquire, it was an affectation for nobility. The art form progressed & proved popular in France during the 1600's & then in Belgium & Holland in the early 1800's. Pure, 24-Carat gold is the classic material used in this process. Traditionally, the metal is scored or scratched in several different directions to a create a field of microscopic barbs. Extremely thin gold, either foil or thread, is laid out in a pre-set pattern, then pressed onto the surface. The barbs end up adhering to the gold, then blended during the hammering process & securing the gold into place. The work is then blued to darken the background. Final detailing of the gold is done with a variety of punches & fine tools.
Condition: The top of the barrel of this pistol is marked with a single line address ''-ADDRESS SAM L COLT NEW-YORK U.S AMERICA-'', the left side of the frame is marked ''COLT'S PATENT''. The left side of the barrel housing & the cylinder have proof marks. The cylinder also displays the number 4440. The full SN is stamped on he barrel lug, frame, trigger guard & butt. There is what appears to be an inspection mark ''L'' under the SN on the frame, trigger guard & butt. The carved ivory grips are excellent, with a beautiful light patina. The right grip displays a rendition of the American crest, with a serpent in it's beak. The floral scroll gold damascened finish is excellent, retaining full coverage & very minimal thinning of gold, only to small areas of speckling. The underlying blue/black finish is also excellent. The trigger guard has been engraved in a similar pattern as the damascening, displaying floral/ornamental scroll patterns. Bore is good, with strong rifling & spotty areas of pitting. The barrel holds a single front bead & the hammer has an integrated notch that acts as rear sight when the hammer is cocked. Comes with a three page article on Gold Damascening. This fabulous revolver is truly a one of a kind & an exhibition quality firearm in excellent original condition. It would be a wonderful addition to any collection!* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 8000 to 12000
