Description

OUTSTANDING!! Colt, Model 1851 Navy Conversion Civilian Model, CAL: 38RF, MFG: 1850, SN: 1790, Single Action Revolver, 7 1/2'' barrel. Out of the Famed Herb Glass collection. This extremely rare example is a civilian gun & was originally manufactured from the Colt factory as a cartridge revolver, it was never percussion revolver. The civilian factory conversions are much more rare than military conversions & are seldom seen. This exact gun has been featured in two different publication, the ''Gun Report'' March 1981 Issue & in the book ''Metallic Cartridge Conversions: The History Of The Guns and Modern Reproductions''. A couple physical characteristics that vary from the norm are the loading lever plunger hole & a rare dished lug on the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked with the single line address ''-ADDRESS SAM L COLT NEW-YORK U.S AMERICA-''. The left side of the frame is marked with the two-line patent dates with dashes ''-PAT JULY 25. 1871'' over ''-PAT JULY 2. 1872-'', the left side of the trigger guard is marked ''36CAL''. The cylinder has a crisp naval scene & the outer edge is marked ''ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843'' along with ''COLT'S PATENT No 790'' on the side of the cylinder. The full SN is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard & butt. The loading gate has assembly number 3340. The ivory grips are excellent, aging very well, with webbing on the bottom of each grip, consistent with real ivory. The original nickel finish is excellent, rating 98% overall, with numerous tiny thin brush lines, light flaking around some edges & a couple small areas of spotting on the barrel. The hammer & trigger are blued. Bore is good, but dark & rough, with pitting amongst strong rifling. The barrel holds a front bead & the hammer has an integrated notch that acts as a rear sight when the hammer is cocked. Action & cylinder timing are excellent & tight. Additionally, this revolver comes with a letter from Dow Heard to a previous owner, & references of this gun being in the book listed above, with a printed page showing where it is pictured & featured. There is also a copied single page from '51 Colt Navies'' by Nathan L Swayze with some info on rare civilian factory conversions. This gun is extremely crisp & well cared for. It would be a featured piece in most Colt collections.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 12000 to 18000
