RARE!! Massachusetts Arms Co., Wesson & Leavitt Belt Revolver, CAL: 31, MFG: 1850's, S/N: 370, 4 7/8'' barrel. Introduced by the Massachusetts Arms Company in 1850, it was the first real competitor to Samuel Colt's designs. However, it appeared that the revolver's design infringed on three of Colt's patents. In 1851, Samuel Colt filed & won a historic patent infringement lawsuit against the Massachusetts Arms Company. This caused production to be stopped after approximately just 800 manufactured. The top of the cylinder is marked with the Mass. Arms Co. address: ''MASS. ARMS CO. CHICOPEE FALLS''. The side of the lock is correctly marked ''WESSON'S & LEAVITT'S PATENT'' & there is also patent information stamped on the back of the cylinder & on the frame face inside of the action along with the SN. This already rare example is made even rarer as engraved in a floral/ornamental pattern. It is displayed on the side lock, frame, hammer & with faint markings remain on the cylinder. The wood grips are fair, with numerous small contusions, nicks, scratches & a repaired cracked chip at the right top & a fill chip on the lower right corner. The metal finish has toned to a mix of gun metal grey & thin brown patina, with spotting. Bore is fair, dark & worn, with pitting. The barrel holds a pinched front sight & on the upper rib next to the pivot point there is a small fixed rear notch. The trigger guard appears to have been replaced. Surprisingly, the action & timing still appear to function properly, which is rarely the case. This is a truly rare example of a pre-Civil War percussion revolver. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2000
