Smith & Wesson, Model 39-2 ASP, CAL: 9mm, MFG: 1972, SN: A159796, Semi-Auto Pistol, 3 1/4'' barrel. This pistol comes with a S&W Factory Letter which indicates it was originally delivered on September 1,1972 to the oxford Police Department of Oxford, CA. Records indicate it was originally shipped with a 4'' barrrel, blue finish & checkered walnut grips. The pistol was later converted to the current ASP configuration. The ASP is a custom made handgun designed & built by Paris Theodore from the early 1970's to 1987. The ASP was a reworked Smith & Wesson Model 39 or 39-2, employing a shortened slide, a fixed bushing (in lieu of the Smith & Wesson designed collet bushing), the unique Guttersnipe sight system, clear Lexan grip-panels, a fully ramped & throated, shortened barrel & a smoothed radius profile to ensure no risk of snagging on the draw. The clear Lexan grips are excellent, with very light surface scrapes. The dry-lubricated Teflon finish rates 98% overall, with very tiny blemishes. This coating is reported to be more durable than the more typical Teflon formulations used in cooking appliances & utensils. Bore is excellent & bright, with crisp rifling. Adjustable rear sight & fluorescent orange blade front sight. Comes in a soft black vinyl case, with red interior & an extra mag. Also comes with the S&W Factory Letter, a couple of articles on these ASP pistols & other literature. The cost for the complete ASP modification package on a customer-supplied handgun was $475, & was done by a subsidiary company, Armament Systems & Procedures, Inc. Due to the limited number of conversions completed, this early generation ASP pistol is fairly rare & in excellent condition.* FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 3500
