Winchester, Model 1866, .44 Henry Cal., MFG. Antique, SN: ??7981, Lever Action Rifle, 24 1/2'' Octagon barrel, Full mag. This rifle sustained a break of the lower tang which has a non professional repair. The break & repair has obscured much of the SN. The wood stocks are very good & solid, however the right side of the wrist has a nicely repaired 4'' spliced piece of wood, which matches perfectly & was lightly part of the break of the lower tang. The stocks display numerous small nicks, gouges & contusions, especially on left side of stock. The metal finish has worn to a gun metal gray. The brass receiver, forend cap & buttplate have an aged patina & some staining. Bore is very good, with spotty areas of roughness amongst solid rifling. Barrel mounted with the correct flip-up ladder rear sight, with slide graduation to 900 yds & long blade front sight. Consistent with the 3rd model, it has the block font SN stamped behind the trigger on lower tang. Rifle has the hinged trapdoor crescent buttplate, which carries a partial ''7981'' SN. Fitted with an early factory sling loop in the fore cap & stock. A rustic 1866. displaying the character of authentic frontier use.
