Sharps, New Model 1863, CAL: 52, MFG: 1863-65, SN: C14035, Lever Action Vertical Breech Carbine, 22'' round barrel. The barrel is faintly marked ''SHARPS RIFLE MANFG. CO. HARTFORD CONN'', & ''NEW MODEL 1863'' behind the ladder sight. The left side of the receiver is marked in a two line address ''C SHARPS' PAT SEPT 12TH 1848'' & the right side of the receiver is marked ''R.S.LAWRENCE' PAT APRIL 12TH 1859'' & the side lock is marked ''C.SHARPS' PAT OCT 5TH 1852'', but worn & not fully legible. The straight grip wood stocks are excellent, as refinished & displaying minor contusions & scrapes to the finish. The metal is a mix of remnants of original blue, gun metal gray/brown patina & added finish. Bore is good, with intermittent pitting & roughness. The barrel holds a flip-up rear sight, with graduations from 1 to 8 & a blade front sight. Buttstock carries a smooth metal buttplate. Saddle ring may be a replacement. The most famous, single-shot percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the .52 caliber breech-loading Sharps carbine. Without a doubt, nearly all of these carbines saw service with either the Union or Confederate regiments, & it was a favorite arm of the cavalry. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 3500
