Marlin, Ballard Rifle, CAL: 32-40, MFG: 1870-90, SN: 959, Lever Action Falling Block Rifle, 32'' Octagon Zischang Barrel. August O. Zischang was 30 years old when he emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1876. His first employment was with the Sharps Rifle Company in Bridgeport, Conn. Later Zischang went to Syracuse, NY where he was in business with Nichols & Lefever. In 1879 he opened his own gunsmithing shop & began the production of target barrels, which soon gain the reputation for their accuracy. Due to his expertise developed while working at Sharps, many of his finest rifles were built on the Sharps 1878 Model hammerless action. The Zischang name was highly regarded & became well known in illustrious shooting circles & by sportsmen of the time. Besides making fine barrels for the Sharp's actions, Zischang also barreled the other standard actions of the time, including many fine Ballard rifles like this examples. The barrel is marked ''A.O. ZISCHANG SYRACUSE, N.Y''. The left side of the receiver is marked in a two lines, ''J.M MARLIN NEW HAVEN, CONN USA, BALLARD'S PATENT NOV 5 1861''. The flat pistol grip stock & checkered forend are excellent, as nicely refinished. The stock displays fabulous feathered grain. There is a 1'' grain crack on the forend & other small contusions, scratches & scrapes. The metal blue finish on the barrel rates 85% overall, with wear to the octagonal edges & couple spots thinning to gray, along with intermittent spotting & minor pitting. The receiver & lever have been polished silver. Bore is excellent, with a few light spots amongst clear rifling. Buttstock carries a brass Schuetzen buttplate. Dual set triggers. The upper tang holds a large flip-up peep sight, with large aperture disk & graduation on the left side of the sight from 0 to 3 in .05 increments. The barrel holds a large globe front sight. There are multiple holes tapped & drilled on both the top of receiver & barrel flat, some remain open, others filled. These A.O. ZISCHANG marked rifles are fairly rare, particularly on that presents so well as this rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 4000 to 8000
