RARE W & C Scott & Son, Hammer Double, CAL: 8 GA, MFG: 1873, SN: 34415, Break Action SxS Shotgun, 34'' Damascus barrels. The solid, matted rib is marked ''W & C SCOTT & SON MAKERS & PATENTEES LONDON''. Both side plates are marked ''W & C SCOTT & SON''. The original, finely checkered & capped pistol grip wood stocks are excellent & solid. There is an excellent & professionally spliced wood repair on the lower left side of the wrist & a small corner chip repair on the right side. Both repairs are so well executed, we missed them upon first inspection. The stock appears to have been cleaned & nicely recoil over the original finish, likely done at the time of the repairs. The stocks have other minor contusions & scrapes to the finish. There's a blank silver inscription medallion on the bottom comb. The Damascus barrels have a distinguished thumb print pattern, which have toned to a smooth brown patina. The underside of the barrels are stamped with the SN, along with proof stamps, ''CHOKE'', ''9B'', ''10M'' & ''Not For Ball''. The metal locking mechanism of the forend is also stamped with the matching SN. The border engraved & case-hardened receiver, sideplates & hammers still display nice case-coloring tones, with darker colors remaining in protected areas. There is a nicely executed dog's head engraved on the left side lockplate. Bores are excellent, with just a few spots of roughness, which is unusually good comparatively to other antique 8 ga hammer doubles. The solid matted rib holds a single front bead. Buttstock holds a checkered buttplate. Double triggers. 14 1/8'' LOP, 1 3/4'' DOC,1 7/8'' DAH. A very nice example of an 1870's large gauge shotgun. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 5000
