Description

RARE!! Bullard Large Frame Repeating Rifle, CAL: 45-75, MFG: 1886, SN: 203, Lever Action Rifle, 27'' round barrel, Half mag. The patent for the Bullard Repeating Rifle was granted Aug. 16, 1881 to James H. Bullard. The company started in Springfield, Mass. early in 1882 as J.H. Bullard & Co. & by May 6, 1882 was called the Bullard Repeating Arms Association. On Oct. 11, 1883 the company reorganized & became the Bullard Repeating Arms Co., which remained the company name until ultimately being terminated in January 1891. Six basic frames were used to make all Bullard Rifles, including the Military & Experimental Models. Two are repeater actions & four are single-shot actions. Large-frame repeaters such as this example were used for the 40 to 50 caliber range & the small frames/single-shots were used for the smaller calibers. The large-frame rifles serial's ranged from 1 to 1500 & 2501 to 2700. With this example being #203, it is believed to be part of the first year production. Although, many believe the Bullards to be a superior design in many ways to the Winchester & Marlin arms of the day, the Bullard Company never achieved the success of their larger rivals & only produced between 10,000 to 12,000 arms from 1886-90. The original straight grip wood stocks are good & solid. The stock has two tightly repaired grain cracks (4'' & 6'') at the wrist, emanating from the upper tang. along with other contusions, scratches & scrapes. The forend has a glue repaired 2'' fracture on the left side, as well as edge chips, contusions, scrapes & dings. The stocks carry an added thin layer of finish over the original finish. The metal finish is a mix of original finish toned to a brown patina & an added brown patina. The lever is case-hardened, with faint tones of case-coloring remaining in protected areas. The serial # can be found on the rear of the frame, just behind the hammer slot. The left side of the receiver is marked ''BULLARD REPEATING ARMS COMPANY/ SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. AUG. 16. 1881.'' Bore is very good, with light spotting & pitting amongst strong rifling. The barrel holds an updated quad leaf rear sight, with three folding leaf & pinched silver blade front sight. The stock carries a crescent metal buttplate. The dust cover is missing the top screw, which needs to be replaced in order for the dust cover to retract properly at time of levering & for action to function properly. When retracted, lever & action are smooth & tight. Bullard rifles are considered very rare in any condition, with the large frame models commanding the highest values. This is a great & rare opportunity to own one of these rifles. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1800 to 3500
