Massachusetts Arms Co, 2nd Model Carbine (1863 model), CAL: 50 Percussion, MFG: 1863-65, SN: 7556, Lever Break Action Rifle, 20'' barrel. This percussion carbine was patented by Edward Maynard of Washington, D.C., December 6, 1859, & manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The first model was introduced into United States service in the late 1850s, it was put into mass production in 1861. These 2nd model 50 cal. carbines were issued to Federal Union cavalry Units during the Civil War, with over 20,000 produced. The original straight grip wood stock is fair, well worn, but solid. It has a putty patch repair at the toe, grain cracks at the buttplate, scrapes & dings. It was correct for this model to not have a forend. The stock also displays ''AJN'' & ''JM'' boxed military inspections cartouches on the left wrist. Wood finish appears original. The metal finish has toned to a mix of brown patina & metal gray, with consistent spotting throughout. The left side of the frame is marked ''EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6 1859'' & ''MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS'' on the right side. The serial # appears on the lower tang. Bore is fair & consistently rough. The barrel holds a flip-over two leaf folding rear sight & a pinched blade front sight. Stock carries a smooth metal buttplate. The lever swings freely & action opens. No saddle ring or slide bar on this example & the percussion nipple is not present. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
