CUSTOM CONVERSION Sharps Sporting Rifle, CAL; 45-120, MFG: N/A, SN: 90699, Lever Action Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, 29 3/4'' octagon barrel. This rifle started life as 1863 Military Purcussion carbine. These military carbines were later converted for a 50-70 centerfire matalic cartridge between Feb. 1868 & Oct., 1869 by Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. for the government according to the contract Nov. 2, 1867. A new breech block replaced the percussion type for use with these metalic catridges. In the late 1870's these converted rifles were sold off by the military & many of them were again reconfigured for the civilian market by Sharps & other well known specialty shops. This example has been reconfigured to resembled the popular & rare Sharps 1869 Sporting Rifle. The custom straight grip wood stocks are excellent. They display highly figured & beautiful grain & a rich hand rubbed oil finish. The forend has a pewter/silver inlaid Sharps rifle style tip. The finish is overall excellent, displaying minor dings & scrapes. The barrel has an antique flat rust chocolate brown finish. The case-hardened receiver has worn mostly gun metal gray, with shadowy remains of case-colors & actual colors remaining in protected areas. The barrel is stamped ''Old Reliable'', address stamped ''SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN.'' & ''CALIBRE 45''. Consignor indicates the barrel is confiugured for a 45-120 cartridge, with an excellent, bright bore, with sharp rilfing. The receiver shows the correct Sharps & Lawrence stamps on the lockplate & right receiver, & the Sharps 1848 patent stamp on the left is still partially visible. The left side of the receiver carries a slotted filler screw where the saddle ring bar once resided. The SN is stamped on the upper tang & on the underside of the barrel under the forend. The barrel holds a ''R. S. Lawrence'' style flip-up ladder rear sight, with graduations from 1 to 8 & a Sharps windage globe sight, with bubble spirit level. The glass cylider in the sight is of the early plum color, but does not have any liquid remaining. The stock carries a smooth crescent metal buttplate. Double set triggers. The mechanics all appear very good. Rifle comes in a custom green case, with brown leather accents, straps & burgundy interior. Includes in the case is a tall sliding aperature disc tang sight, with screws. This is an excellent looking Sharps Conversion Sporting Rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
