J. Stevens Arms Co. Model 70 Visible Loader, 22 SHORT - LONG or LONG RIFLE, MFG:1912-25, SN: 786, Pump Action Rifle, 22'' round barrel. The model 70 was produced from 1906 to 1934, but underwent several minor changes. It changed to 22'' barrels in 1912, & changed names from ''Visible Loading Repeater'' to simply the ''Visible Loader'' in 1926 when Savage took over Stevens production. That puts this 22'' example between 1912-25, before Savage took over. The straight grip wood stocks are good & solid. There is a 1 1/2'' missing chip from the front of the forearm on the right side & two 2'' hairline cracks in the forearm. The stocks display added finish, with several small contusions & scratches. Metal blue finish has worn to a gun metal gray, with areas of brown patina remaining. Bore is fair, with remaining rifling amongst dark pitting & with a bulge in the barrel 2'' from the muzzle end. Barrel fitted with an adjustable rear sight & long blade front sight. Forend screws appear to be replacements & the buttplate has been replaced with a thick piece of leather. A unique little .22 pump. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 100 to 200
