RARE FN Herstal (Browning Patent) Model Semi-Auto .22 Top Loader, CAL: .22 LR, MFG: 1937 (Belgium), SN: 28332T37, Semi Auto Take-down Rifle, 19 1/2'' round barrel. This is generally recognized as the first semi-auto .22 LR produced. Invented by John M. Browning, FN began production in 1914. The rifle was sold around the world, but not in the U.S. because Browning retained the patent rights for the U.S. market & a version of the rifle as a side loader was produced by Remington as the Model 24 & later the 241. Remington ceased production of the 241 at the Ilion, New York plant in 1949. FN first began exporting the Browning SA-22 to the US in 1956, after the expiration of the Remington manufacturing rights. The FN top loader was therefore the predecessor to the Browning SA-22 side loader most of us recognize today. This rifle is therefore one of the early rare predecessors which while not imported into the U.S., somehow made it here. The original round pistol grip Walnut stocks are excellent, with only a couple of tiny storage scuff to the excellent finish. The metal blue finish rates 98% overall. Fitted with the original adjustable rear & small blade front sights. Bore is excellent. The stock carries a metal buttplate. A rare
& collectible semi .22 rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
