RARE ENGRAVED Colt Model 1878 Hammer Double, GRADE 8, CAL: 12GA, MFG: 1886, SN: 20793, Break Action SxS, Choke: IMP/IMP, 28'' Damascus steel barrels. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line & is considered to be one of the finest quality American production shotgun. As a factory engraved ''Grade 8'', this shotgun had very limited production & is extremely rare. The deluxe checkered & round knob pistol grip stocks are excellent. There is an ebony inlay in the forearm tip & a blank silver inlaid inscription medallion in the belly of the stock. The stocks display very nice grain & the original finish, with added protective oils. They display minor surface scrapes, scratches & dings. The metal finish on the barrels has worn to a gun metal gray with a thin layer of brown patina The finger print pattern of the damascus barrels is still visible. The case-hardened receiver & other components have also worn gun metal gray, with some faded remnants of case-colors & a thin brown patina. The receiver, trigger guard, barrel & other metal components are nicely hand engraved, with a hunting dog on the left, two snipe on the right, a grouse on the trigger guard & the surrounding areas display scroll, border & decorative engraving. The receiver is marked ''COLT'' on the locks & the rib displays a ''COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.'' address. Bores are excellent. The stock carries a the original Rampant Colt checkered buttplate with engraved screws. Matching SN's are located on the lower tang, water table of the receiver, base of the barrels & on the inside of the forend. Double triggers. This is a very nice original example of a scarce & desirable engraved Colt 1878.* Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 2500 to 5000
