Description

Janssen Son & Co, RARE 101 RANCH Hammer Double, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: 1895-1915, SN: 938, Break Action SxS Shotgun, 20 1/8'' barrels. The 101 RANCH earned most of its notoriety from the Wild West shows that it staged, but it was also 110,000 acre cattle ranch in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma before statehood. The ranch was owned by the Miller brothers & the next door neighbor was Major Gordon W. Lillie, who performed as Pawnee Bill. He motivated the Millers to produce a Wild West Show of their own. The Millers made their transition from putting on local shows to the national scene in 1907, when they performed at the Jamestown Exposition in Virginia. Later in 1907, the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show began the tour circuit in Brighton Beach, New York. Joe Miller, the eldest son, was an exceptional equestrian & star performer. Over the course of the show's history, its cast included Lillian Smith, Bill Picket, Bessie Herberg, Bee Ho Gray, Tom Mix, Jack Hoxie, Mexican Joe, Ross Hettan, Wenona the sharp shooting Indian girl & of course an elderly Buffalo Bill. On this double, the right side of the stock has a tacked silver plate that reads ''101 RANCH 1897'', It was likely used in their shows. The checkered & flat pistol grip wood stocks are very good & solid. They display an added coat of finish over the original finish, contusions, scrapes & dings, with a couple small hairline cracks. There is a blank initial shield on bottom of pistol grip. The metal finish has toned to a mix of metal gray & a thin brown patina, with spotting area of pitting. The case-hardened receiver has faint tones of case-colors remaining in protected areas. Bores are very good, with striations & light roughness. The solid rib holds a single front bead. Buttstock carries grooved metal buttplate. There are a couple of replaced screws. A unique gun with a cool Western history. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
