CASED, Merkel, Model 401E (Pre-War), CAL: 16 GA, MFG: 1930's, SN: 18751, Break Action O/U Shotgun, 27 1/2'' barrels. Merkel guns are truly custom, hand-made & master-engraved firearms, which are made to customers' specific orders. They offer superior aesthetics & functionality. This gun has been fully & professionally restored & presents very well. The original checkered, cheeked & round pistol grip stocks are excellent. The hand carved embellishments & checkering are very nicely executed. The restored high polish finish is excellent, with very few minor handling marks & light finish wear. The restored metal blue finish on the barrels rates 97% overall, with some of the barrel stampings polished thin. The receiver has an aged silver & black accented appearance & is excellent. There are remnants of case-coloring in protected areas. The receiver was professionally engraved by Simon Heim, his name is marked on the left side of the barrel. The entirety of the receiver & surrounding metal areas are tastefully & beautifully hand engraved. The left side plate displays a mallard game scene, surrounded by beautiful scroll engraving & the right side plate has a pheasant game scene, accompanied by the same style scroll engraving. The barrel ends, forend metal components & screws also display similar scroll patterns. Bores are excellent & bright. The trigger guard is beautifully crafted out of horn. The solid matted rib holds a single front ivory bead. Buttstock carries a Merkel buttplate. Comes in green Merkel case, with brown leather accents & matching interior, inside cover has a large brown leather ''Merkel'' logo. Case comb. #990. This is a very nice example of a Pre-War Merkel shotgun.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 2500 to 5000
